New Era College is proud to have recently hosted the Faculty of Engineering Industry Liaison Board (FEILB) which brought together key players from the Botswana engineering sector, academia, and regulatory bodies to present and consider some engineering Programmes currently being developed at New Era College under the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Programme Accreditation Standards. The FEILB-NEC consultative process ensures that the Programmes not only respond and are relevant to market demands but that they are also IEA compliant. This professional compliance guarantees that the NEC engineering graduates will have at the requisite professional parity with their global counterparts thereby empowering them for the global market and mobility. The FEILB was established as a strategic consultative platform for the Faculty of Engineering to engage with and receive useful feedback from the industries it serves; particularly those in the built environment, electrical and electronics, mechanical, and telecommunications engineering sectors. It’s core mission is to ensure that the engineering programmes at New Era College are informed by current industry needs and technological trends. The meeting was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at New Era College, Prof Cheddi Kiravu, who emphasized that the FEILB represents a significant shift towards a more responsive and industry-aligned engineering education model. He noted that the board’s work will help produce graduates who are not only technically proficient but also ready to meet the demands of Botswana’s evolving industrial landscape.Guided by global benchmarks for professional engineering accreditation contained in the IEA’s Washington, Sydney and Dublin Accord standards, the consultations involved 8 Engineering Programmes: the BEng in Electrical and Electronics, BEng in Power and Energy, BEng (Hons) in Telecommunications, BEng in Construction, BTech in Electrical and Electronics, BTech in Telecommunications, Postgraduate Technology Diploma in Electrical and Electronics, and the Postgraduate Technology Diploma Telecommunications The Standards Manager at the Engineering Registration Board, Mrs. Claire Mosarwa, graced the deliberations with her presentation on Botswana’s International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Accreditation Roadmap whose target is to have Botswana be a signatory of the IEA by 2026.The ultimate goal of the FEILB-NEC deliberations is to ensure that New Era College’s engineering programmes are endorsed by the respective IEA Accords. The IEA endorsement in turn ensures that all NEC engineering graduates are recognized globally for professional engineering practice and mobility. The IEA recognition means that New College graduates have the requisite engineering status allowing them to work anywhere in the world. Speaking on behalf of the ERB, Ms. Claire Mosarwa, Standards Manager at the Board, underscored the significance of this journey: “Achieving IEA membership is not just a milestone for Botswana, but a transformation for our entire engineering profession. It means that our graduates will be recognized globally for their competencies, and our institutions will stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world. New Era College’s proactive alignment with these standards shows real leadership in advancing engineering education.”The Breakaway sessions following the plenary session allowed participants from different engineering disciplines to engage with the proposed programme designs, ensuring that each area reflected both academic rigor and industry relevance. The feedback from these sessions will form the basis for final revisions before submission of the Learning Programmes (LPs) to the ERB for endorsement and the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) for formal accreditation. The FEILB meeting not only reinforced the college’s dedication to international accreditation but also solidified its position as a key contributor to Botswana’s national engineering capacity-building efforts. With the FEILB now formally established, New Era College is poised to play a leading role in shaping the next generation of engineers who will drive the nation’s development and global competitiveness.New Era College of Arts, Science and Technology was the first private institution in Botswana to offer engineering programs through its Faculty of Engineering sixteen years ago. The College now also offers programmes in Commerce, Education, and an expanding range of Science and Technology disciplines. As a leader in STEM education, New Era College is proud to continue setting benchmarks for excellence, innovation, and industry collaboration. Through initiatives like the FEILB and its alignment with the IEA Accreditation standards, the College reaffirms its mission to produce graduates who are globally competitive, industry-ready, and committed to advancing Botswana’s socio-economic transformation.
